I feel incredibly fortunate to live within walking distance of so many awesome music venues. One of my favorite things about living in Richmond is the bounty of live music offerings every night of the week. The Camel is a smaller venue whose roster always supports local musicians while also offering a sprinkling of talented acts from out of town. I like how the Camel displays visual art as a complement to its function as a music and social venue. Every month the curator changes its visual art display, and this month’s really caught my eye.
Turns out the paintings are by a VCU educated visual artist, Renee Kaelbar. Many of the pieces, like this one, give the impression that they’re literally EXPLODING outwards in a kaleidoscopic offering of colors. I’d love to have one of these! In “real life” you get a sense of Renee’s incredible talent for layering colors and shapes. I love art that toys with geometrical concepts on flat surfaces.
Angela Bacskocky, a Richmond-based fashion designer, speaking to RVA Mag contributor Kristina Headrick.
This is quote from an interview I’m editing right now, which is focused on Bacskocky’s Nest fashion line. I never thought a fashion interview would hit this close to home for me, but goddamn. This paragraph describes the core of my issues with social interaction.

I really, REALLY enjoyed conducting this interview. She is so relatable and also so intelligent. Talking with her was fascinating because she articulated what is in my opinion a brilliant artistic vision for her designs/concept. She manages to imbue this vision with a highly empathetic lens through which she attempts to understand human relationships. The ability to combine this with aesthetic creativity AND fine craftsmanship makes her a great artist in my eyes. I really hope to see her line “go places.”
